Custom art and design, who owns it, and how can it be used?
How is it different from royalty free artwork?
How much does it cost to have original art created?
Let’s talk about how the image is going to be used.
For example, let’s say that the client, you, is a coffee manufacturer.
You want to hire The Studio to create a signature image to represent your new flavor.
Will this image be used to advertise the flavor on posters in local stores where the beverage
is served only in one city? Or will the new flavor design be used on packaging, posters and
advertising in a international advertising campaign?
If the image is only used in one city - in a limited run of display posters,
you would receive limited rights to the image for a lesser fee.
If it needs to be used for a broader purpose, we would sell you broader limited licensing or a full buyout. In a full buyout the client owns the image, and can reproduce the artwork forever,
in any number of ways, and is more expensive.
The more our designs contribute to the value and identity of an item, and the more
potential value of the item, the more our designs are worth. In order to be compensated
for our work we need to assess the use of the artwork before we can estimate a cost.
Understandably, royalty free artwork may be less expensive.
However, that piece of art is used by countless other folks trying to get attention to
their product and service as well. If they happen to have more media running than you,
their image will be seen more frequently, and loses it’s impact when used on your advertising too.
For instance, Once there was a royalty free image of a couple on the beach
used for a condo image campaign, unfortunately, the same day these ads ran, a TV ad
ran using this same royalty free image for adult diapers. So, RF has its ups & downs.
So, how much does it cost to have original art created?
That depends mostly on usage. So send us an email, and we can discuss your project.
Logos
Of course a logo is an image designed especially for you and only you. Logo pricing
also depends on certain factors such as usage and exposure. So, an example would be, the logo we design for a local dog groomer will be considerably less expensive than the logo we create for Pepsi.
